Android 5.0 Lollipop OS for Android devices has brought in a lot of new things, but it also has replaced some of the old things as well. One good example of this is the disappearance of the Gallery app from Android and Photos app being the only choice to access photos.
Previous versions of Android have both ‘Gallery’ app or the ‘Photos’ app or sometimes both, depending on the device and version. Lollipop now comes into picture to remove all that confusion and provides only one default ‘Photos’ app for the users.
If you look back at both of these apps, Photos was the app that had come out as a part of Google+ and Gallery was just like any other normal gallery app on other platforms. All the photos related to an individual’s Google+ account can be handled from the Photos app. The Photos app was also a flexible one because it worked with any camera app that was installed in the Android device. Photos app also was updated more number of times than the Gallery app which implies that users will get to experience new design and features with the Photos app than with the Gallery. You might as well consider that Google was hinting that ‘Photos’ is the better option.
On a side note, this was observed on the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 devices as they have got the roll out of Android 5.0 Lollipop all over the world. Other OEMs could also include a Gallery app in their devices, we might never know.
