WhatsApp, the popular messenger app, has partnered with Open Whisper Systems to provide end-to-end encryption  by default for the messages sent by its users. This is publicly announced by Open Whisper systems in a blog post, stating that they will be incorporating TextSecure protocol into the clients and achieve end-to-end encryption.

They mention that the current WhatsApp Android client already supports TextSecure protocol but group chats and media lack encrypted messaging and they will be providing that  along with TextSecure support for more platforms in the coming days. This addition of TextSecure encryption protocol will be an incremental process, they say, as WhatsApp currently runs on all major platforms and so, they will be implementing this encryption protocol stage-wise till all the platforms support full end-to-end encryption on WhatsApp.
