Unlimited data plans are now seldom found, so it becomes very necessary to manage the data usage on our smartphones. Windows Phone 8.1 has a built-in feature called “Data Sense” to help users understand how much data they are using on their phone. This post sheds some light on how to use Data Sense to manage data usage on Windows Phone.

Data Sense can limit the data usage when the user is nearing his data plan limit and also can postpone tasks which use more data until the phone is connected to Wi-Fi.

How to track Data Usage with Data Sense on Windows Phone 8.1:

1. Swipe left on the Start screen to go to the App list. Select “Data Sense”   data sense icon windows phone 8.1 from the app list.

2. Tap on any of the following from “Limit Type

– Tap on One time if you have a preset amount of data only to use and the data will expire on a specific date

– Tap on Monthly if you have limited data to use for a month and you will be charged for over use.

– Tap on Unlimited if you have access to unlimited data usage but if you still want to track your data usage.

3. While selecting One time or Monthly, tap on the given lists to fill the details and dates accordingly.

4. When you are done entering, tap on Done.

How to Conserve Data on Windows Phone with Data Sense

Windows Phone 8.1 gives its users two ways to conserve data with Data Sense on Windows Phone – Limit the amount of background data your phone uses and/or Reduce data use when you browse the web.

How to reduce background data usage on Windows Phone 8.1 with Data Sense:

1. Go to Data Sense data sense icon windows phone 8.1 from the App list.

2. Tap on Settings . Swipe the bar beside Restrict background data togle icon windows phone 8.1 to the right to turn it ON.

– To restrict background data when you are nearing your limit, tap on “When I’m near my limit“.

– To restrict background data always, tap on “Always“.

NOTE: Selecting “Always” restricts live tile updates, email sync unless you are on Wi-Fi.

3. To turn on restricting background data while in roaming, tap on “Restrict background data when roamingtogle icon windows phone 8.1.

NOTE: Restricting background data may prevent your email from syncing, background uploads and downloads and live tile updates. So it is reasonable to select “When I’m near my limit“.

How to reduce background data usage on Windows Phone 8.1 with Data Sense:

1. Go to Data Sense data sense icon windows phone 8.1 from the App list.

2. Tap on Settings.

3. Select any one of the following from “Browser data savings“:

– If you don’t want Data Sense to apply any data saving means to web pages that you browse, tap on Off.

– If you want to save data slightly by compressing pictures and other things on the web pages you browse, tap on “Standard“.

– To save even more data by compressing pictures, blocking ads and to download only a part of the web page, tap on “High“.

– If you want to leave the choice to Data Sense in picking up the best choice of the available settings depending upon the limit of your data plan, tap on “Automatic“.
