iPad, iPhone and iPod touch

How to backup iPhone, iPad or iPod touch using iTunes:

1. Download and install the latest version of iTunes on your computer.

2. Connect your iOS device (iPhone, iPad or iPod touch) to your computer.

3. Select File -> Devices -> Backup

If you have iTunes of version 10.7 or earlier, right click on the device from the list and select Backup Now.

You can also backup data from your iOS device by using sync option to the iTunes.

To Sync your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to iTunes:

Using this sync option, the following data can sync to iTunes from the device:

  • Applications
  • Audio files like music, podcasts, audio book and iTunes U content
  • Bookmarks
  • Books
  • Contacts and calendars
  • Movies and TV shows
  • Photos
  • Notes
  • Documents (File sharing apps only)
  • Ringtones
USB sync:

1. Launch/Open iTunes on your computer.

2. Connect the iOS device to the computer using USB cable.

3. In the upper right corner, click on your device name (Device will be seen as iPhone or iPad or iPad based on which device you have connected).

If Device is not found, then it may be seen by hiding the side bar. To hide the side bar, go to View ->Hide Sidebar

4. Once you click on Device, Click Apply which can be seen on the lower right corner of the iTunes window, to sync.

Wi-Fi Sync:

Wi-Fi sync can only be performed using iTunes of version 10.5 or later and iOS 5 or later

1. Launch/Open iTunes on your computer.

2.  To setup Wi-Fi sync, connect your iOS device to the computer using the USB cable.

3. In the upper right corner, click on your device name (Device will be seen as iPhone or iPad or iPad based on which device you have connected).

4. In the Summary tab, check-mark the box beside Sync with this [iOS device name] over Wi-Fi.

5. The iOS device will automatically sync if:

  • The iOS device and the computer are on the same network
  • The iOS device is charging
  • iTunes is open on the computer

6. Click Apply or Sync to sync the device to iTunes.

To verify that iTunes has finished the backup successfully, go to Preferences and select the Device tab. The name of the device, date and time of the backup created will be displayed.

How to Restore a backup from iTunes into iPhone, iPad or iPod touch:

1. Connect the iOS device to the computer that has your backup.

2. Go to File -> Devices -> Restore Backup

3. If you are using iTunes of version 10.7 or earlier, right click on the device from the list and choose Restore from Backup.
