Windows phone has an inbuilt option to backup the data from it in a very simple manner. When the Windows phone is in sync with the Microsoft account provided by the user, there is an option to enable the automatic backup option. This backup data will be stored to the Microsoft account linked to the phone and also to OneDrive of the Microsoft account. Get to know more about OneDrive.

By enabling backup option in the Windows phone, the backup copy of the following data from the phone will be created:

  • Apps that are installed on the Windows phone, including the progress and scores of any game apps.
  • Saved passwords of the accounts that are used through Windows phone
  • Call history
  • Text messages
  • Photos and videos
  • The accounts that have been setup (added to ) on the phone.
  • Any words that have been added to the dictionary.
  • Start screen, its layout and its theme, lock screen.
  • Other settings from the phone.

Manually, backup of the data in the Windows phone can be done at any time by going to “Settings” -> “Backup” -> “Apps+Settings”.

Slide the “Settings Backup” bar to the right and turn it ON. Then tap on “Backup Now”.

 

To backup apps+Settings from Windows phone automatically:

1. Swipe right on the Start screen and the App list appears.

2. Select “Settings” -> “Backup”  -> “Apps+Settings”

3. Turn on “Settings Backup” by sliding the bar to the right.

4. Then to backup apps, with the “Settings Backup” turned on, slide the “Apps Backup” to the right and turn it on.

 

Backup text messages (SMS and MMS) from Windows phone:

1. Swipe right on the Start screen and the App list appears.

2. Go to “Settings” -> “Backup”

3. Tap “Text Messages” and turn it on.

In this way the SMS and MMS text messages from the Windows Phone will be stored to OneDrive so it would be easy to restore them back into the phone from where they were copied or into a new Windows phone.

4. In Windows phone 8, there is an option to enable or disable “Chat Backup”.

 

Backup Photos and videos from Windows phone:

To backup photos and videos from the Windows phone , they are to be uploaded to OneDrive so that they can be accessed at any point of time later.

But this upload process of photos and videos from the Windows phone to OneDrive requires the phone to be connected to the internet.The uploading process may take lot of time if the files to be uploaded are of large size. So if mobile data plan is used for this process,it can consume the remaining data.So it is best to do this by connecting the phone to Wi-Fi instead of using mobile data plan

If automatically upload option is enabled in the windows phone, then until the phone is connected to internet through Wi-Fi or the mobile data plan, the photos or videos will not be uploaded into OneDrive.

 

To upload the photos and videos automatically from the Windows phone:

1. Swipe right on the Start screen and the App list appears.

2. Tap on “Settings” -> “Backup” .

3. Tap on “Photos+Videos” and a list of options appear on the phone screen.

  • “Don’t upload” option is to be selected if automatic upload of photos and videos from the phone is not desired.
  • “Good Quality” option is to be selected if the photos and videos are to be uploaded at a resolution that occupies less space in OneDrive storage.Note: This “Good Quality” option is not available in Windows phone 8.1.
  • “High Quality” is to be selected if the photos and videos are to be uploaded at the highest resolution.

NOTE: The methods given above to backup the Windows phone data are for windows phone 8 or windows phone 8.1
